Stuck in Time

I visited a little town called Chamula. It is about 10km outside San Cristobal so it was a quick day trip.  Many say this place is stuck in time. The locals adhere to ancient beliefs and traditions. They refuse to allow outsiders to change their way of life.

* Photos of the people and their church’s interior are forbidden.
* Locals consume no dairy products; the community diet is mostly vegetarian and animals are raised for their skins, not their milk or meat.
* Birth dates are not recorded and birthdays not celebrated. In the community cemetery, high on the hill outside the town, wooden crosses bear only the dates of death.
* Women cannot vote.
* Women neither cut their  hair nor wear makeup.

The church in the center of town is very famous. So famous that is cost you $3 just to walk in. You are constantly reminded…
